I don’t disagree with you about that. If the number of people that buy Amazon’s garbage from their streaming sticks wasn’t significant, the investment-savvy Amazon surely wouldn’t be investing in a new OS and future devices that utilize it. Just saying, anyone that wants more flexibility can’t have it and will jump to other options.

True. I have 2 Shield Pros I’ve been using for 2.5 years. I’ve also set up devices for a lot of friends, coworkers, and family. For years my go-to recommendation was the fire stick. I switched to the onn Pro when it became available. My mom is in an assisted living center. Been using a 4K stick for several years. Switched her to the onn last week. Loaded a custom launcher to make it simpler for her to use. She’s a happy camper. The wifi in that place is sketchy. The onn is performing with less buffering than the stick.

I have 5 Firesticks of various versions. I have heard a lot of good things about the onn 4K Pro box so I decided to try it out. Have had it for a few weeks and so far, prefer it over the Firestick.

welcome

They will probably be depreciated to force people to step up or perhaps offer a tradein deal.

i would suggest very low.

Amazon has confirmed that future Fire TV devices will run Android 14 OS. Vega OS will be deployed and tested on Echo Show and Echo Hub devices.

Not sure now with these recent stories.

Recent news over past few days says otherwise unfortunately.

Yes, Bezos has gotten too busy sending chicks into space.

I think the news that they will keep the Android 14 OS for their partner TVs is telling. Toshiba, insignia etc know that a Vega OS would cost them sales.

I just don’t understand why they would want to segment their market and cause confusion for their consumers and have the trouble/expense of supporting another OS.

From what I read, it’s all about control of the device and how it can be used, and what you are or aren’t allowed to add to it. Vega is a Linux based OS apparently so that would normally be a + imho, but not with the hinted at restrictions. Going to be an intersting 2026 for the Amazon streaming market.

The good thing is that we all have options. Options are a good thing in my mind.

I guess that would happen eventually. Of course Amazon hates side loading. I guess I’m ok with using my Firestick Max for me legit subscription services and my Onn box for my side loaded .apk’s. Those eventually brick my Amazon products anyway, then they need factory resets.

What happens if i have an IPTV downloaded on my firestick thatvI pay a yearly rate for. Is there any other way to keep it?

If I recall right on aftv news they said that they would support Android until 2028.

Oh ya, they will have to support it for a few years at least. Updates and such.

It looks like most will receive at least security updates until at least Dec 31, 2029. That isn’t bad at all.

The security of your device is our top priority. Amazon Fire TV streaming media devices, Smart TVs, Soundbars, and Soundbars with Fire TV built-in receive guaranteed software security updates until at least four years after the device is last available for purchase on our websites. After that time, we strive to provide software security updates for as long as we can (subject to technical and other limitations).

Yeah, that is correct.
One of the things that we have to do is to look at the Fire system from Amazon’s POV. One reason that decent fire TVs are so cheap is they are loss leaders to tempt people into buying other products.

I read where the OS is only for “new” devices and not old ones. I always worried an update would remove the side-loading option. Is that a possibility? Could Amazon fear all the law suits and arrests for pirating going on and back off the sideloading? Curious why that option was added, when they try to control the apps you add. . like Roku! I have a basic Onn I’ll have to try.
