I did get the same problem with some apps, but since i have most of them in the flash drive storage and not in Amazon storage, i’am able to use them without any problem.

Let me make sure I’m getting this. On my firesticks I have almost all my sideloaded apps in external storage. Will that protect me from Amazon’s update from 7 to 8?
My next question would be: What about SS and Kodi. I can get SS from Amazon so not so worried, but what about Kodi. Can Kodi go on the external drive without creating problems and if so will it be protected against the update? I have not been updated to 8 yet so if I need to make changes it’s on a timeline.
Please Advise

It’s been stated before that whatever os the sticks have it will stay there with updates for that particular os only. If you have 7 it won’t go to 8. YouTube has a video saying onn boxes are also dropping apps like flixvision and live net tv. Another app just got disabled, blink streams. Personally I don’t believe Amazon’s reason for disabling these apps is correct as the problem doesn’t affect Amazon only the firestick user. They don’t want to appear to be the bad guy so this excuse works for them. Hopefully these disabled apps will get updates to stay ahead of the game..

Don’t buy a device that can be controlled by who you bought it from would be the best option imo.

Yep, and hopefully 3rd parties will continue to build on AOSP and maybe alternatives like SlimBox will receive more development as backlash grows. Google and Amazon are hellbent on increasing ad revenue and they don’t see someone using Projectivy and apps like Syncler, Stremio and Kodi as customers they want since they can’t control ads or influence what you watch.

Is the Nvidia Shield considered an AOSP device?

No it runs on Android TV but the backend is AOSP like all Android devices.

Thank you, Avid08!

So the Shield should be immune to any blocking 3rd party apps that Google might do?

Probably because Google TV os has in some ways replaced Android TV os but not completely and I doubt the shield will ever have another update to a newer android version tbh.
I thinks the shield is pretty safe from the hands of Google.
But no one really knows if Google will start blocking third party apps but it is a possibility but you do have the option to turn off play protect that monitors apps on your device.

I’m just trying to have a plan for the future. I do have my Shield Pro so I won’t stress if my Cube becomes a paperweight due to blocking.

I doubt Google goes full block anytime soon, but I could see them taking the Amazon approach and just breaking little things to inconvenience users and developers of apps they don’t like to encourage people to stick to their way of thinking.

What does AOSP mean? Please let me know. Thank you.

Android Open Source Project. The code is open source so its free to look at and inspect.

As stated above, it is the open-source version of Android that allows freedom for device makers. The downside is that services like Netflix won’t allow their apps to work at full resolution etc.

FireOS itself is a fork from Android that Amazon forked so they could control it.
